WAWV TV 38 is the ABC network affiliate in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is owned by Mission Broadcasting but operated under a number of service agreements by WTWO TV 2, a Nexstar Media Group station. WAWV broadcasts the area's only primetime online newscast.
WAWV has used many call letters since it was launched in 1973 as WIIL TV. In 1978 it changed hands and was renamed WBAK TV. Mission Broadcasting bought the station in 2003 and in 2005 changed the call letters to WFXW. It later changed them again to the current WAWV TV. The close relationship between Mission and Nexstar is a case of a virtual duopoly, in which the FCC allows companies to skirt FCC rules restricting the number of TV stations a business can own in a single market. All of the TV stations owned by Mission Broadcasting are in markets where Nexstar also owns a station, and all Mission stations are operated by Nexstar.
