WPXI TV 11 is the NBC network affiliate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with breaking news, weather and sports coverage. It began broadcasting on September 1, 1957 as WIIC TV, the second commercial VHF station in Pittsburgh. It was owned by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In 1964, the station was sold to current owner Cox. In 1970, WIIC made Pittsburgh broadcasting history when Eleanor Schano became the first woman to anchor a newscast alone. On April 20, 1981, the call sign was changed to WPXI (Pittsburgh 11, with XI being the Roman numeral sign for 11).
