Landmark Media Enterprises LLC

Landmark Media Enterprises LLC (formerly Landmark Communications, Inc.) is a privately-owned media company with interests in digital publishing and marketing services.

The company owned 46 American newspapers in small and mid-sized markets through its subsidiary Landmark Community Newspapers, LLC. On May 27, 2021, that business was sold to Paxton Media Group, a privately controlled newspaper publishing oompany based in Paducah, Kentucky.

Landmark owns Dominion Enterprises, which publishes magazines and produces direct response websites about the real estate, employment, recreational, industrial and travel markets. The company is also involved in database marketing, career education and trade shows.

Landmark is headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, where the company's former flagship newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot, is published. On May 29, 2018, Tronc Inc. (now Tribune Publishing Company) bought the newspaper from Landmark for $34 million.

The Batten family controls Landmark Media Enterprises. In 2008, Landmark tried to sell all of its media holdings including newspapers and television stations. However, the 2008 financial crisis prevented possible acquirers from obtaining debt financing.

Landmark founded and owned the cable television service The Weather Channel, which is based in Atlanta. In June 2008, Landmark sold The Weather Channel to a consortium led by NBC Universal and two private equity firms -- Bain Capital and the Blackstone Group. The buyers are reported to have paid $3.5 billion. Now owned by Allen Media Group (aka Entertainment Studios), The Weather Channel is a leading source of weather information on television, available in 79 million U.S. households via cable and satellite TV.

Landmark sold WTVF TV 5 in Nashville to Journal Communications in 2012, and KLAS TV 8 in Las Vegas to Nexstar Broadcasting Group (now Nexstar Media Group) in 2014.

Finley - your Virginian Pilot - editor is not only a journalistic coward, a weasel with his excuses, but a schmuck not defending his reporters and putting their lives at risk

Fire his ass - he is Orwellian Speak on Steroids an insult to journalism and what little integrity it has left.

Fire him -summarily.

No wonder they keep losing money. With a Editorial Board at the Roanoke Times no better then the NBC editing disaster on the Zimmerman situation. The Roanoke Times has done the same thing to our Attorney General. If landmark doesnt step up and fire Meade then its done. Facebook is very powerful tool.

We lost our small parrot and wanted put a notice in lost and found. The Perry Couty Indiana News Paper said we would have to pay $18+ for the two paper printings(one week). If we had a TV to give away it would have been free. What happend to Public Service???

Frank Batten Sr., the retired chairman of Landmark Communications and founder of The Weather Channel, has died at 82, Earl Swift of the Virginian-Pilot reported on September 11, 2009:

"He was a son of privilege, the heir to a family fortune, a man whose life, in other hands, might have been measured in dollars and cents.

Instead, Frank Batten forged a legacy not on what he made but what he created.

From errand boy he rose to publisher of The Virginian-Pilot and its afternoon sister, then parlayed his newspapers into an adventuresome media company with global reach. He helped lead the fight for integrated schools in Norfolk, midwifed Old Dominion University into being, commanded The Associated Press and its far-flung correspondents, and defied a legion of doubters to create The Weather Channel."
